First Look Thoughts

Today we are going to be sharing our thoughts on the increasingly popular “First Look”. The first look continues to become more and more common, so we want to go over what it entails, the benefits of it, and how to decide whether or not to do it.

So first we must answer, what is a first look? A first look is a moment that takes place a few hours before the ceremony where the bride and groom see each other for the first time on their wedding day. It is usually pre-arranged with their wedding photographer in a private place away from family and friends to best capture that special moment they first see each other on their wedding day just for them. Some couples choose to read their hand-written vows in private during their first look and some choose to have the entire bridal party present! There are no rules when it comes to the first look, so you can be as creative as you want.

If you are wondering why you wouldn’t just wait to see your spouse-to-be while walking down the aisle as is traditional, here are some reasons why a first look may be more ideal:

If the bride or the groom are dealing with nerves and stress, seeing your future partner and being able to have that private moment for five to ten minutes can really help to calm both parties down. You can even talk each other through whatever is creating some nervousness and help each other get through it! Doing a first look also eliminates any nerves you may have during the ceremony, and can help if you are worried about remembering what to say, or crying TOO hard during your vows!

Doing a first look actually allows more time for pictures before the ceremony, which means you have more time be with your guests during the reception. Your photographer will usually go from the first look straight into pictures, so all you will have left to take after the ceremony are bridal party and family photos. As opposed to doing pictures after the ceremony, when you do them after the first look there is no need to worry about trying to hide from guests as they try to congratulate you immediately after the ceremony, or rushing through the photos because you are hungry and are missing cocktail hour!

In regards to pictures, the first look can also help your pictures look even better as a couple since you will both have fresh hair and makeup. There is no way to save your faces from the tears of joy, but whatever sweat and wind you may have to deal with during the ceremony can be avoided being seen in your pictures if you choose to do the first look.

Everyone has heard it, but it still rings true, your day goes by SO FAST. Looking back on it, everything will seem like a blur, so the first look can be a great way to regain some perspective and focus, and really have a moment that you remember in detail. This can give you a moment for just you two before everything begins.

Whatever you choose to do, we believe that it’s your wedding day, and it’s all about you. You get to decide what works best for you and your life long partner, and at the end of the day that is the most important thing. No one way is better than the other, and we will easily accommodate whichever route you choose to go. Do what is going to make you happy on the most memorable days of your life.
